Peter was born 11 May 1850 in Wald-michelbach, Hesse, Germany, and is in the USA by 1870. He begins work as a bar tender in New York. Then moves to Richmond with his brothers and marries Elizabeth Messerschimdt (1852-1888) daughter of John and Elizabeth in 1873 in Richmond. Peter appears to convert from Catholicism as his children are baptized at St. John’s German Evangelical Church. The couple have 2 children. Christopher (b 1872) died young. Marie Elizabeth “Mamie” (b 1876) moves to Germany to live with relatives after her mother’s death.
In 1880, Peter, Elizabeth and Mamie are living on Main Street in Richmond. Living with them are 6 employees of his beer company. He appears to be doing well for himself.
On 3 Nov 1895 a full page article appears in “The Times” newspaper on the “Peter Stumpf Brewing Company” and the “Process of Manufacturing Beer.” It’s a fantastic article with great descriptions and several pen and ink drawings.
In Dec 1895, Peter marries again. This time to Hermina Morganstern (1867-1938), daughter of Otto and Marie. They have 4 children; Otto M (b 1897), John P (b 1898), Marie M (b 1899) and Dorothy H (b 1903).
On 7 Dec 1900, the local newspaper announces that Peter is the President of a new company, “Merchants Cold Storage and Ice Company.” On the board is August A Busch, the son of Adolphus Busch, creator of the Anheuser Busch Brewing Company.
Peter died on 26 Jan 1903 at his home in Richmond.
